Calcium silicide CaSi2 is a gray-white or dark gray to black solid substance with a melting point of 1033°C. Insoluble in water, it decomposes in water to generate hydrogen and calcium hydroxide. How is calcium silicide produced?
1. Elemental silicon and calcium are directly smelted to obtain calcium silicide with higher purity. But the operation has to be done in two steps.
Step 1: Mix the pure calcium chips and pure silicon powder evenly, put them into a hard biscuit porcelain boat, quickly put the porcelain boat into the quartz reaction tube, and pour CO2 into the tube. The porcelain boat has been heated to 1000°C. In just a few seconds, the mixture melted and the reaction proceeded vigorously. Take out the porcelain boat, and the generated CaSi immediately solidifies and smashes. CaSi is a porous block with lead gray and metallic luster.
The second step: Mix the CaSi with the calculated amount of Si powder evenly, put it into a nickel boat, and heat it to 1000 ℃ in the H2 flow. Heating was required for 15 hours due to the slow progress of the last stage of the reaction.
2. Mix pure CaO and silicon with appropriate fluxes CaF2 and CaCl2, and melt them at 1400 °C to obtain CaSi2, in which a large amount of silicon is incorporated.
